Description
Barium sulfate (BaSO₄) is an inorganic compound that exists as a white crystalline solid or powder. It is well-known for its very low solubility in water, which is a key property for many of its applications.
One of the most significant uses of barium sulfate is as a contrast agent in medical imaging, particularly for X-rays of the digestive system. When a patient swallows or receives a barium sulfate suspension, it coats the internal surfaces of the esophagus, stomach, and intestines, making them more visible on X-rays due to barium’s high density and opacity to X-rays.
Beyond medical applications, barium sulfate is also extensively used as a pigment in paints and coatings, where it contributes to whiteness, brightness, and opacity. It acts as a filler in plastics, paper, and rubber, increasing their density and improving their texture. In the oil and gas industry, finely ground barium sulfate (barite) is a crucial component of drilling mud, where its high density helps to control pressure and prevent blowouts. It also finds applications in the glass and ceramics industries.
Barium sulfate itself is considered relatively non-toxic due to its insolubility, which prevents the absorption of harmful barium ions into the body. However, precautions are taken to ensure it is free from soluble barium compounds, which are toxic.
