Nitric acid (HNO₃), also known as aqua fortis (Latin for “strong water”), is a highly corrosive and strong mineral acid. It is a colorless liquid when pure, but older samples tend to acquire a yellow cast due to the accumulation of nitrogen oxides (NO₂) formed by decomposition.
