Phenol has a distinctive, medicinal odor, somewhat sweet and tarry.

It is a weak acid, about a million times less acidic than carbonic acid, but can still donate a proton under certain conditions. The hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to the benzene ring makes it reactive and allows it to participate in various chemical reactions, including electrophilic aromatic substitution.

Historically, phenol was one of the first antiseptics used in surgery, pioneered by Joseph Lister. While its use as a direct antiseptic has largely been replaced by less corrosive alternatives, it remains a crucial industrial chemical.

Key applications of phenol include:

Production of polymers: It is a key precursor in the manufacture of phenolic resins (like Bakelite), epoxy resins, and polycarbonates.
Synthesis of other chemicals: Phenol is used to produce a wide range of other chemical compounds, including bisphenol A (used in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins), caprolactam (a precursor to nylon-6), and various dyes, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals (like aspirin and salicylic acid).
Disinfectant and antiseptic: While less common now for direct use on skin, phenol and its derivatives are still found in some disinfectants and cleaning products.
Extraction solvent: It can be used as a solvent in certain biochemical applications, such as the extraction of DNA and RNA.
Phenol is toxic and corrosive to the skin and mucous membranes. Exposure can cause severe burns and systemic effects. Therefore, it requires careful handling and appropriate safety measures.
